Plastics & waste

Waste collection & photo challenge

Marine environments are suffering from accumulated waste, particularly plastic waste. This waste, mostly carried by watercourses, reaches the lagoon and settles on the banks or the seabed. It breaks down into microplastics and severely damages marine biodiversity.

We collect waste in key areas where decomposing plastics are most dangerous to marine species, and increasingly difficult to gather. Collection activities are accompanied by friendly workshops to bring the public together around our actions. We have developed sporty collection workshops, photo challenges, discovery activities exploring the flora and fauna we help preserve, and solar oven cooking sessions.

This workshop informs participants about what plastic is, its history, its origins, and its value as a material. Once this overview is established, we transform plastic bottles into jewellery. Our tools allow bottles to be cut into coloured strips. Children can then braid them into rings, pendants or keyrings.

Waste on holiday

This workshop places waste in a postcard setting. Workshop participants tell the imaginary story of this waste and give it a history, a new life. When does an object become waste, and when does waste stop being waste?
In spring 2024, we called on partner photographers to take beautiful photos of the tour around the Berre Lagoon. We selected the 12 most representative images of our coastline and printed 1,200 copies.
Additionally, the waste images to cut out are now real photos of objects we found on waste collection outings. A photographer from the partner association "l'Image en Jeu" took portraits of the most unusual objects. We turned them into sticker sheets to cut out. This approach aims to spark discussions about what we want for the places familiar to us. Could we develop the habit of picking up a few pieces of waste during our walks and daily journeys, drawing others into our virtuous circle?
